Jessica Discovers Dominica

Posted on

Travel Specialist Jessica has recently visited Dominica, an unspoilt Caribbean gem. Located between Guadeloupe and Martinique, Dominica is a nature lover’s paradise. From towering mountain peaks and waterfalls to enchanting rivers and secluded beaches, the island’s scenery is varied and stunning. Despite being a fairly large island, Dominica is relatively untouched by tourism and is perfect for those looking to explore off the beaten track.

Exploring the Island

Whale watching is a popular activity in Dominica, thanks to the fact that whales reside in the waters around the island year-round. Jessica went out on a boat trip on the first morning of her stay – unfortunately she didn’t see any whales, but was luck enough to see a dolphin which came right up to their boat. Her next activity was snorkelling on the Champagne Reef. Due to thermal hot springs on the ocean floor, bubbles can be seen rising to the surface of the water, much like in a champagne glass. She was also very impressed by the colourful marine life, saying it was some of the best she has seen in the Caribbean.

Dominica is famous for it’s mountainous scenery, hiking trails and waterfalls. Jessica first visited Trafalgar Falls, which are easily reached via a 10 minute walking trail. Next she went to Middleham Falls. The walk through the jungle took around 45 minutes, but she said it was definitely worth it, as it is possible to cool off in the crystal clear waters once you get there! Another popular place to visit is the Emerald Pool, which can be reached by a short walk along a well-maintained trail. This natural pool is named after it’s vibrant colour caused by the sunlight reflecting on the foliage in the water.

A visit to Dominica would not be complete without exploring Indian River – a famous filming location for Pirates of the Caribbean. Jessica was paddled through the mangroves by an expert guide who gave her plenty of insight into the varied foliage and wildlife they came across. There was even the opportunity to stop for a refreshing rum punch halfway through the tour!

Where to stay

Jessica split her stay in Dominica between two contrasting hotels – Fort Young Hotel & Dive Resort located in the capital Roseau, and the secluded and luxurious Secret Bay.

At Tropic Breeze we specialise in using our personal knowledge of each hotel to offer the best recommendations based on our extensive experience of the Caribbean. If you would like further information on holidays to Dominica, please call us on 01752 880 880 or email [email protected]
