Jess Explores Antigua

Posted on

Earlier this year, Jess from our sales team was lucky enough to head out to Antigua, where she stayed at some of our favourite hotels and explored the island. It was Jess’ first time visiting Antigua and she was blown away by the island’s natural beauty. She found the landscape to be very different to some of the more volcanic islands she has visited previously, and loved the gentle scenery and pristine white beaches that can be found at almost every corner of the island.

Exploring the Island

A trip to Antigua is not complete without visiting Shirley Heights. Offering stunning views over English Harbour and an incredible atmosphere, it is easy to see why this is one of the island’s most popular spots. A steel band starts playing from around 4.30pm, and visitors can sample local dishes from the grill whilst watching the sunset. For those wanting to make an evening of it, Jess said the party really gets going a bit later…

Jess also enjoyed a trip to Nelson’s Dockyard, where visitors can walk around the historic and beautifully preserved eighteenth century buildings. One of the highlights is a fascinating museum, where you can see several original pictures and read all about the history of the dockyard, which once served as a British naval base. It is also home to some lovely gift shops, art galleries and restaurants.

Jess always recommends taking a catamaran trip when in the Caribbean, but she felt that it was a real must when in Antigua. It is a great way see the the rolling hills and beautiful views of the island and when staying on an island famous for its sailing heritage, it would be a shame not to head out on the water.

Jess’ Hotel Recommendations

 The Inn at English Harbour

The Inn at English Harbour is an exclusive, beachfront hotel located on the southwest coast of Antigua, perfectly positioned on a beautiful wooded headland at the entrance of the historic English Harbour. Providing a blend of history and charm, the accommodation offers the finest in luxurious living with only 28 rooms, including stylish junior suites and cottage style beach cabanas.

“I was surprised by how close to the beach all of the rooms are, not just the beach cabanas. The rooms were well equipped and felt fresh, whilst still maintaining a traditional feel. I also really liked the pool area, but the highlight of the hotel has to be the staff – they were so friendly and couldn’t do enough for you.” – Jess

 Blue Waters Resort & Spa

Blue Waters Resort & Spa is set within 17 acres of tropical gardens and wrapped around the picturesque Soldiers Bay. Accommodation options range from rooms and suites to villas and penthouses, with interconnecting rooms available for families. Blue Waters Resort offers varied dining choices in its three restaurants, along with two bars, a spa offering a selection of treatments and activities including tennis and non-motorised watersports.

“This is a really lovely property. Everything looked so well maintained and the gardens were stunning. The resort feels incredibly spacious and although they were quite full when I was there, the grounds never felt busy. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming and the staff were so friendly.” – Jess

 Carlisle Bay

Carlisle Bay is an exclusive five-star resort on the undeveloped south coast of Antigua, set beside a sweeping bay against a backdrop of rolling hills and tropical rainforest. The 82 luxurious suites are all decorated in a contemporary style, located either directly on the stunning beach or just a few steps away across lawns. Carlisle Bay has four a la carte restaurants, along with excellent facilities striking the perfect balance between relaxation and activity.

“The service was excellent with plenty of attention to detail. I especially liked that they placed cool boxes with cold water between the beach chairs every morning. The food and cocktail selection was also great, but the highlight of Carlisle Bay has got to be its beautiful and quiet stretch of beach.” – Jess
