Grenada is probably best known as the home of Grand Anse Beach – a beautiful 2 mile stretch of classically Caribbean palm fringed shore and one of the world’s most famous beaches. With a superb range of hotels and resorts, ranging from five star all inclusive luxury to boutique family run hotels, it is easy to see why the island is so popular with those looking for sun, sea and sand. But there is so much more to Grenada than its stunning beaches, and we’d like to share our recommendations with you on how to get the most out of your next holiday to this tropic paradise!
If you would like to speak to one of our travel advisors who has visited the island personally, please call us on 01752 880 880 or email [email protected].
WHEN TO GO
Grenada is an ideal holiday destination all year round thanks to its tropical climate. The temperature is fairly constant in winter and summer averaging around 28°C, with high season falling between January and April when it is cooler. There are reasonably frequent showers in the summer months, although these usually last less than 10 minutes. Hurricanes are a possibility at this time of year but Grenada is rarely hit by tropical storms as it is at the southern end of the hurricane belt. There is plenty to do in Grenada at all times of year even if there is some rain.
WHAT TO DO
Sculpture Park
This is perhaps one of Grenada’s most iconic sites and a must visit for both divers and snorkellers. Found in the Molinere Beauséjour Marine Protected Area, this underwater gallery of sculptures is not only a fascinating sight for visitors, but it also acts as an artificial reef, attracting a stunning array of marine life. The sculptures include the famous ‘vicissitudes’ – a circle of figures holding hands which were cast from local children, ‘the lost correspondent’ – a man working a desk covered in historical newspaper cuttings and the ‘tamcc faces’ – a series of life sized faces set side by side and
seemingly moulded into the large boulder behind them.
Annandale Falls
A short 15 minute drive from the capital, Annandale Falls is a peaceful picturesque area offering short walking trails, beautiful tropical plants and a 30-foot waterfall. Visitors are invited to spend time wandering around the surrounding gardens, to take an invigorating swim and visit the visitors centre.
River Antoine Estate Rum Distillery
This privately owned distillery is the oldest functioning water-propelled distillery throughout the whole of the Caribbean. The rum making processes here have change very little in the last 250 years and the tour guides are extremely knowledgeable about this process – they even finish the tour with a nice 67% proof organic rum for you to taste!
Belmont Estate
Set in 400 acres of lush rolling hills in the north of Grenada, this 300 year old working plantation offers a fantastic restaurant, plantation and cocoa tours, a museum, goat dairy, animals, gift shop, cafe, craft co-op, beautiful gardens, delicious organic chocolate, produce stall, conference facilities and much more. We highly recommend the bean to bar chocolate tour.
Saturday Market at St George’s Square
Grenada’s market is one of the most colourful in the Caribbean. It is at its very most colourful on Saturday mornings when you will find all tables overflowing with fruit, vegetables and spices – all set out on rickety tables, shaded by colourful umbrellas.
EVENTS
Grenada Sailing Week (late January-early February): A number of sailing races take place over the course of a week, making the most of the excellent conditions with accompanying on-shore events.
